Learn to Sail Programs
Opti One
Class Time: This class alternates morning sessions from 9am-12pm, and afternoon sessions from 1pm-4pm. The class alternates each week of the summer to all of our young members a suitable time to take part. First week of the summer (starting June 30) is a morning session, following week is an afternoon session.
Cost: $155.00 Age: 6 and Up ( Daycamp has sailing and accommodates ages 4-8)
Description: This is an introduction to sailing which is taught in the optimist sailboat. The class starts on the beach and learns how to put the sail up, they then move into shallow water and learn how to stear a boat, how to pull in the sail and where the wind is coming from. All from the shelter of the shallow water at the beach with the instructor in the water beside them. The class progress to deeper water and sailing around marks. Games and fun activities are incorporated to keep learning fun. Suggested starting age is 6 years old.
Next Step: By the end of the week a comfortable optimist one sailor should feel comfortable sailing in deeper water (near the channel) and be comfortable sailing in a boat by themselves. At this point the instructors will present the sailor with a completion award and they can move up to Optimist Two.
Opti Two
Class Time: This class also alternates afternoon sessions from 1pm to 4pm and morning sessions 9am-12pm. First week of the summer (starting June 30th) is an afternoon class, the following week is a morning class.
Cost: $155.00 Age: 6 years old and up and be recommended to progress from Opti One.
Description: This class in the next step from optimist one class. The class does a review of rigging, stearing and sail controls. Sailors are introduced to points of sail. This class aims to sail in deep water all the time and will work on sailing around a course and learning to tack and gybe.
Next Step: When the sailor is comfortable sailing upwind, tacking, gybing and sailing on their own they can then try our Intro to Optimist Racing on Wednesday Evenings OR they can move up to White Sail.
Introduction to Optimist Racing
Class Time: Every Wednesday afternoon for 7 weeks beginning the week of June 30. Starting time at 3:30pm. Practice from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Participating in Optimist race night from 5:30pm to approximately 7:00pm with coach support during the races.
Cost: $100.00
Description:
Next Step: Sailors can continue to do Wednesday night race nights and complete thier White Sail levels. Private coaching can be arranged for sailors interested in continuing Optimist Racing.
White Sail Level 1-3
Class Time: The white sail class runs Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. We have two sessions the July sessions and the August session. There is a pro-rated option for signing up for less than a full month session. It is suggested that two weeks be the minimum.
Cost: $655.00 Age: 10 and up OR completed Opti Two
Description: Sailors typically sail twice a day. They begin with a lesson in the morning and then a sailing sessions. They come in for lunch under the tent on the lawn, have a second mini lesson and go out sailing again They work on the CYA sailing white sail level 1-3. Details on the level can be found at www.sailing.ca/home Sailors use the CL 11's for this class. White Sail one in a beginner level where they learn to steer, parts of the boat, rigging, how to trim the sails and get an introduction to the points of sail. White Sail two they learn how to sail upwind, reaching and running, refine the points of sail and learn more about trimming the sails and running the boat. White Sail Three sailors learn about capsizing, how to recover the boat, how to sail more difficult courses and refine the points of sail.
Activites, games and much more are included to keep learning fun.
Next Step: After completing all levels of white sail Bronze class is the next step.
Bronze
Class Time: Bronze runs Monday-Friday from 9am to 4pm. There are two sessions to choose from July session and August session. You can selected individual weeks, we suggest a minimum of two weeks. A pro-rated charge applies for this.
Cost: $650.00/session $20.00 to select individual weeks
Description: The bronze class uses 420 sailboats with spinnaker and trapeze. The sailors work on their advanced sailing skills learning how to hike, trapeze, fly spin, probloem solve and on land classes cover CE/CLR, sail flow and sail controls. Some introduction to racing is included but not part of the standard. Some advanced Bronze sailors may be invited to sail with the 420 Silver/Gold racing and may be invited to away regattas.
Next Step: Once you have complete Bronze level 4 and 5 the 420 Silver/Gold Racing OR the Junior Lightning Racing Team is the next step.
420 Silver/Gold Racing
Class Time: There is a July session and an August session. Practice runs Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm with additional time for regattas, travel and 420 race night. It is strongly suggested that a sailor take part in an entire session in order to contribute and be a part of the team atmosphere.
Please consult the Junior Racing Calendar for details on dates of away regattas and other planned events.
Cost: $700.00 with additional fees for away regattas.
Description: The 420 Silver/Gold program uses 420 sailboats. Silver and Gold racing levels are worked on but not the primary focus. Sailors participate in at least one away regatta and several at home regattas. Developing tactical, technical and theoretical understanding of the 420, weather, sails, race course and much more is cover throughout the session. Each level can take longer than one summer to complete and require a sailor to be committed to the program and the team.
